Wolmanized® Cox Industries
Alternative to
Traditional Treated Wood Applications Natural
SelectTMpressure-treated
wood is effective against termites and fungal decay, both
above ground and in ground. It is ideal for many residential
and commercial applications:

The
preservative in Wolmanized®
Natural
SelectTM
wood is new to North America, but is recognized and approved
by government and trade organizations in more than 15
countries. Commercially introduced in Europe in 1992, the
wood treated with this formulation has become the world's
most effective and successful alternative to traditional
treated wood. Natural
SelectTM
wood meets the demands of specifiers for projects where
toxicity is a concern, and fills a need where consumers want
another choice or regulatory action requires an
alternative.
How does the Wolman® E preservative in Natural SelectTM wood differ from CCA?
Wood treated with the two preservatives performs in a very similar manner. The formulations of the preservatives are different, however. Principal ingredients of Wolman® E are copper, boron, and azole. CCA consists of copper, chromium, and arsenate. Treating procedures and retention levels are nearly identical. FIFRA (i.e., EPA's pesticide regulations) classifies Wolman® CCA as a restricted use pesticide; Wolman® E is not restricted and does not require California's Prop 65 labeling.
How it works
Wolman® E preservative is a formulation of copper azole. Copper is the principal active ingredient, protecting against termites and fungal decay. Protection against copper-tolerant fungi is provided by an organic azole also used in fungicides applied to fruits, peanuts, and other crops. A third ingredient is boron, which is found in eyewash, vitamins, and antiseptics; in damp but weather-protected conditions, boron diffuses through wood and offers supplemental protection. The formulation renders wood useless as a food source for termites and fungi while keeping the wood attractive, clean, and odorless.
Wolman® E preservative is not a restricted use pesticide and does not meet the definition of hazardous waste. As a result, fewer environmental restrictions apply. No special EPA precautions apply to handling the wood.
Retention Standards
The standards of the American Wood-Preservers' Association specify the following retention levels in pounds of preservative per cubic foot of wood:

Recommended
Hardware
Natural SelectTM wood is no more corrosive to hardware than untreated wood. Hot-dipped zinc-coated fasteners are recommended for protection against the effects of exposure to weather where treated wood is usually used.
