Decking Installation Tips
A. Use the proper spacing for support joists under your deck boards. We recommend 16" joist spacing under S/4x6 deck boards and 24" spacing under 2x6 deck boards.
B. Use the proper size lumber for joists. Consult your lumber supplier for recommended sizes for joists and all other support members and hardware.
C . Use the right fastener. We recommend hot-dipped, not electroplated, galvanized deck screws as the best fastener. Deck screws should be long enough to penetrate the supporting joist by about 2". Predrill two 118" holes at each joist about 314" from each edge of the deck board, then insert and tighten the screws. Use stainless steel screws if you are near salt water. If you must use nails, only ring shank or spiral shank hot dipped nails may be sub-stituted for screws. Ring shank and may be substituted. Use minimum 12d size on 5/4x6 deck boards and 16d size on 2x6.
D. Install the deck boards tight together .Do not leave a gap between the boards!!! Pressure treated wood is saturated and swollen with water when you receive them. As they dry they will shrink to leave a suitable gap of about 118" to 114" between boards.
E. Install deck boards heart side down where possible. This reduces wood flakeout and protects the heartwood from the elements.
